Who do you call for faculty development services?
This spring faculty seeking assistance with key issues shaping their professional advancement and growth as teachers, citizens and researchers will notice some changes in professional development services at IUPUI. To leverage campus resources more effectively to achieve the campus academic plan, Executive Vice Chancellor Sukhatme has reorganized faculty development services within the division of Academic Affairs. These efforts have resulted in the dissolution of the Office for Professional Development (OPD).
Faculty professional development remains a critical issue for the campus. The executive vice chancellor has shifted the hub for these development services to the office of the associate vice chancellor for academic affairs, Dr. Sharon Hamilton. The associate vice chancellor will oversee several units that provide support to faculty in their pursuit of excellence in teaching, research, and service. These units include: the Office of Faculty Appointments and Advancement (FAA), the Student ePortfolio Initiative, the activities related to integration of the Principles of Undergraduate Learning (PULs) and the newly created Consortium for Learning and Scholarship. Additionally, the associate vice chancellor will continue to work closely with academic units to provide support for all matters related to faculty life.
What do these organizational changes mean for faculty seeking assistance? The simple answer is that depending on the support needed, IUPUI faculty will notice little to no difference in the location and nature of services provided. The Centers for Teaching and Learning (CTL), Research and Learning (CRL) and the Office for Women (OFW) continue to occupy the first floor of the University Library, while the Center for Service and Learning (CSL) continues to serve faculty in Business/SPEA 2010. Each of these units will continue to advance their core missions with only slight changes. In contrast, while faculty will still find FAA located in the AO building, their responsibilities have been expanded to more fully address faculty life from a faculty member’s recruitment and hire through post tenure review and retirement.
Two areas where faculty will notice changes lie in the areas of advocacy and support for faculty of color and for associate faculty. The support offered by several units within the former OPD, such as the Office for Multicultural Professional Development (OMPD) and the Associate Faculty Office, has been reassigned across multiple units. Advocacy for and recruitment of faculty of color has been reassigned to FAA and the Multicultural Center, while leadership for multicultural teaching will continue to be provided by the CTL. Advocacy for associate faculty will be provided by FAA while CTL programs will continue to support teaching excellence among part-time faculty.
The Consortium for Learning and Scholarship (CLS) consists of three of the campus-wide core centers: the CRL, CSL, and CTL. It is charged with working collaboratively to further campus-wide programs and activities directly related to IUPUI’s urban mission, especially those which focus on increased student learning and success. The core consortium centers will work to improve teaching, research, service and learning by providing leadership and support for programs and activities in three key areas:
- experiential learning such as undergraduate research, service learning and international/cross-cultural experiences that engage students in making explicit connections between the conceptual work of the classroom and real life experiences;
- faculty work that draws on and/or addresses urban issues in teaching, research, and service. This includes new opportunities and support for faculty interested in broadening their field of scholarship to include the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL);
- activities that promote and foster an inclusive campus climate.
Leadership for the consortium is shared among the Executive Directors for the three core centers: Dr. Megan Palmer (CTL), Dr. Kathryn Wilson (CRL), and Dr. Robert Bringle (CSL).
To help faculty sort through these transitions, we have created a ready reference to some of the more common services provided by these units as well as their key points of contact. The table is also available as a downloadable PDF so that readers can store this information for later reference.
