CLS Spotlight: Center for Teaching and Learning
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is an important partner in the newly formed Consortium for Learning and Scholarship (CLS). As outlined in the last issue of Networks for Learning, the goal of the CLS is to improve teaching, research, service and learning by providing leadership and support for:
- experiential learning (e.g., undergraduate research, service learning, internships, international and cross-cultural experiences);
- faculty work that draws on and/or addresses urban issues in teaching, research and service; and
- activities that promote and foster an inclusive campus climate.
Although the CTL will work further with the Center for Service and Learning and Center for Research and Learning to advance these goals, the CTL is already providing leadership and support in these areas. Listed below you will find each goal followed by a specific resource listing , programs and services available to help advance that particular goal.
Experiential Learning
Internationalizing the Curriculum
In partnership with the Office of International Affairs, the CTL will host a half day symposium on March 20, 2008. This symposium will offer practical suggestions to bring international perspectives into courses, cover current internationalization efforts at IUPUI, and provide resources to leverage IUPUI’s international partnerships in classrooms and research.
Consultations
Consultations are available free of charge for all IUPUI faculty. Consultations can focus on using technology to advance our students’ understanding of global issues or to provide opportunities for interaction across the oceans. Further, consultants are available to meet with faculty about a wide range of topics related to teaching and learning, including bridging in- and out-of-classroom learning and active learning techniques.
Urban Learning Advantage
Academic Work Linkages Model
This is a model currently being developed and refined by the CTL’s assessment specialist, Jacqueline Singh. According to Jacqueline, this is “a collaborative strategy for integrating the Principles of Undergraduate Learning (PULs) and engaging student learning.” The goal is to bring students, workplace supervisors and faculty members together to optimize a student’s educational experience and prepare him or her for the workplace.
Gateway Scholars Program
As part of the Gateway Scholars Program, a selected group of instructors take part in a summer institute, collaborating with our consultants, as well as each other, to discuss and create innovative ways to facilitate learning. Part of the summer institute includes meeting at community agencies and discovering ways that work in the community can be incorporated into courses on campus.
Inclusive Campus Climate
Multicultural Teaching and Learning Institute
Each year the CTL hosts a day-long symposium on inclusive teaching. Co-sponsors have included the Office of International Affairs, Adaptive Educational Services, and Student Life and Diversity.
Diversity and Learning Website
This CTL-hosted website offers a wealth of resources related to inclusive teaching and learning, including teaching techniques and an online module designed to help faculty learn more about inclusive teaching.
Tip Sheets
Our tip sheets available for download on our website and in the CTL, are designed to give faculty members quick pointers on how to improve teaching. Some of the topics include managing difficult dialogues, inclusive teaching and motivating students.
Consultations
In addition to consultations dealing with technology, our consultants can assist faculty in the journey to inclusive teaching. Consultations about working with diverse learners, incorporating a variety of teaching techniques, managing difficult dialogues, and other topics are available.
Although the CTL has new partners, we will continue to provide teaching and technology support to IUPUI’s faculty members and academic staff. As our relationship with the Center for Research and Learning and Center for Service and Learning develops, so will our ability to serve the campus community in more new and innovative ways. For more information, visit us at http://ctl.iupui.edu, or stop by our offices at the University Library; we’ll be happy to see you!
