Awards and Prizes

First Place Winner – $200
Second Place Winner – $100
Third Place Winner – $50
4 Fourth Place Winners – $25
25 Honorable Mentions –$10 gift card

First through fourth place winners are eligible for significant tuition scholarships upon enrollment at IUPUI.

Poetry Awards and Readings Ceremony

Winners will receive their prize and have the opportunity to read their winning entry at the Awards Ceremony. Acclaimed poet, Kelly Norman Ellis, will read her work and discuss the public and private life of poetry at the Awards Ceremony. You may read more information on Kelly Norman Ellis and read some of her poems.

When:: Saturday, March 28, 2009
Where:: IUPUI University Library, Lilly Auditorium 755 W. Michigan Street Indianapolis, IN 46202
Time:: Check-In: 12:30 p.m.
Ceremony Begins: 1:00 p.m.
Program Ends: 3:00 p.m; A small reception to follow immediately.
Parking:: Guest parking for the University Library is available in the North Street Garage (819 W. North Street). You may cross at street level or take the sky-walkway. The Lilly Auditorium is on the basement level of the University Library.

Rules

Contestant must be a high school student or a home-schooled student of high school age.
Only one poem per contestant may be submitted.
Entry must be in English.
No e-mail or fax submissions will be accepted.
The judges regret that they cannot return or comment on individual poems.
~~Deadline for entry is Monday, February 2, 2009.~~ DEADLINE EXTENDED!!! Due to the Weather and school closures, the entry deadline has been extended until Thursday, February 5, 2009.

Entries

The entry period for 2009 has closed.

All on-line entries must be received by Thursday, February 5, 2009 at 11:59 p.m. (EST) to be considered.

Mail-in submissions must be accompanied by completed entry form. Poems entered via US mail shall be typed in a 10 or 12 point font on a single sheet containing only the poem and its title. Please do NOT put your name or any other identifying information on the page containing your poem. Mail-in submissions must be postmarked by Thursday, February 5, 2009 to be considered. Judging

Judging is blind. Entry forms and poems are stored seperately and linked only by a random identification number. Students are asked to keep their name or any other identifying information out of the body of the poem. Contest manager reserves the right to re-dact any personal information that would influence the judging.

Final Selections for the 2008-2009 Contest will be made by Kelly Norman Ellis from Chicago State University. Preliminary selections will be made by the following faculty members from the IU School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI: Karen Kovacik, Terry Kirts and Mitchell L.H. Douglas.
